Each year, through it’s Design Awards Program, AIA Maine sponsors a juried review of Maine architecture to recognize the important and diverse work of Maine architects. The jurors are nationally recognized peers who, after reviewing and critiquing the entries, select outstanding projects for recognition.

Jones Commons, Merit Award.
Jones Commons transforms a two-story mid-century medical clinic into a mixed-use residential and commercial building in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood. Originally built in the 1950s, the building served generations of residents as a family medical practice before falling into disrepair. In 2020, the project team was commissioned to reimagine the structure through adaptive reuse, embracing “missing middle” housing while preserving the building’s cultural presence within the community. Municipal Grand, Citation Award.
Municipal Grand revitalizes a 1961 Federal Savings Bank by Levy & Kiley Architects, transforming it into a 44-key boutique hotel that repositions modernist heritage as a contemporary civic and social asset.
AAmp sought to transform a long-neglected commercial-turned-municipal building into a welcoming destination for both visitors and locals. Located at a prominent downtown intersection, the hotel functions as a hub for lodging, dining, and social interaction. Achieving this required a careful balance of restoration and reinvention: original terrazzo floors, mosaic tiles, and structural elements were uncovered and preserved, while new interventions—custom walnut and oak millwork, bentwood-inspired seating, and layered thresholds—introduced warmth, tactility, and a contemporary hospitality sensibility.
